According to an study of over 30,000 laptops covered by Square Trade Warranties, 1 in 3 laptops bought new in the last 3 years had malfunctioned because of either hardware failure or reported accidental damage.

The most reliable laptops according to the study came from Asus and Toshiba. Netbooks appear to have the worst failure data compared to more expensive laptops. No real surprise, right?. After all, they are cheap and relatively new technology.

Sony and Apple performed better than average with Apple ranking as high as 4th among the 9 manufacturers.

If you read the study you can get more information on how it was conducted.

One surprise for me was that HP finished last. My personal experience has been completely different. I have 2 HP laptops. Both would be considered premium I guess, a tablet and a 17″. I bought these as refurbished (refurbished by the manufacturer with 1 year warranties) and they are both going strong after about 5 years. The only problem I have had is that the original battery on the 17″ laptop now lasts about 10 minutes. Of course, battery life is another issue, altogether.

What about your laptops? Who do you think make the most reliable laptops? And netbook users, what about you? Please comment below.
