How to rid your Google Reader of an old unsubscribed feed.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

I really like Google Reader. I like the ability to be at different computers and still have my feeds handy. I like the interface, how easy it is to use, and its only a bookmark away.

What I don’t like is that I can’t unsubscribe from this one feed. Every time I open up Google Reader, the deleted feed is the first item I see! I set a home page to ALL ITEMS, but the reader opens up with the unsubscribed feed.

I unsubscribed using the FEED SETTINGS button. I unsubscribed in the MANAGE SUBSCRIPTIONS area (accessed either at top right hand menu next to your sign in name, click on SETTINGS, or if you have navigation pane open, look at the end of you subscription list). I cleared my cache, cookies, history, rebooted…everything. But every time I opened up Google Reader the very first feed would be the one I deleted…and mockingly asks if I would like to subscribe!

I searched to see if others had this problem and there are a few hits on forums. But no answers. Finally I thought “Why not download the xml file from GOOGLE, edit it and reload?.” Very easy to do. (You can open the file with Text Edit on MacOS or Notepad on Windows XP. You’ll see basically a text listing of your feeds…just delete the lines with the specific feed information.)

And hurray! It works. For awhile.

I then hit my bookmark and its BACK! I search some more Google Reader forums and then finally…the solution. When I hit my bookmark it comes back. When I click on any other link to Google Reader it’s gone. Soooooo, all along it was my stupid bookmark that was taking me back to the feed that would not die. Fresh bookmark, no offending feed. Wow, sometimes you just overthink it!

If you have a similar problem…change your bookmark on your browser. Really, it is that easy.

  2. Hi Polprav!
Thanks so much for your interest in my blog! I went to your site and notice that you do not provide a link to the article nor to the author of the blogs you quote, (although you do have text that sites the homepage). I will allow a post to be quoted if you provide a hyperlink (full URL) to the article.

    Thanks again!
